Introduction
Google has launched a new AI tool called Pomelli, which tech platforms describe as a potential competitor to Canva, but with a completely different philosophy: understanding the visual identity of the brand rather than just providing design tools.
I decided to test the tool hands-on and see how it handles site analysis, extracting the "brand DNA", and producing ready-made campaigns in a style consistent with the content. Here is the complete experience as it happened to me—with all its surprises and shortcomings.
The beginning: Testing my tech product site
I started with the main site of one of the cybersecurity tools I developed. I pasted the link into Pomelli, then waited the five minutes the tool said it needed to analyse the entire site...
However, nothing happened.
Pomelli could not fully analyse the site. Perhaps because my page is too technical, or it lacks clear design elements that the system can rely on.
An acceptable error... but not an encouraging start.
The second attempt: Using my personal blog
I moved to my personal site—where I write about artificial intelligence, product development, and freelance experiences. I wanted to see if Pomelli would capture my calm, clear, and direct writing style.
I placed the link... I waited...
And the surprise: the analysis took only 41 seconds.
The images, identity, site colours, and even the font styles appeared directly in front of me. Pomelli extracted my visual fingerprint through my articles and images, and even allowed me to refine these elements before finalising them.
Shock: Extracting "brand DNA" with high accuracy
After sorting the elements, the most important result appeared: Brand DNA.
The tool provided:
• Primary colours
• General brand definition
• Core values
• Description of the writing tone
And the description was astonishing in its accuracy:
Inspiring, direct, experienced, and tends towards empathy and clarity.
This is exactly what I try to maintain in my style. I ensured the details, then officially adopted the identity within the tool.
Create a marketing campaign with one click.
After defining the identity, Pomelli presented me with a set of ready-made ideas for marketing campaigns. One of the titles immediately caught my attention:
"Escape the Dev Grind" — escaping the development grind.
A topic I have always written about. I clicked on the title...
And within seconds, the tool generated a complete set of visual materials:
Banners, images, page headers, and even designs closer to professional advertisements.
One of the designs was excellent:
– Dark background with a technical texture.
– Graphic elements resembling workflow diagrams.
– Title: Escape the Dev Grind.
– Subheading: Automate 70% of the busywork. Keep building.
The design looked ready to be used as an advertisement or as a content campaign.
Pomelli combined images from my site with new AI-generated images, creating an unusually cohesive visual language.

Does this mean Pomelli is an alternative to Canva?
No.
The tool is amazing at analysing identity and smart at linking design to brand voice. But it is limited in fine-tuning:
• You cannot change facial features or clothing colour in an image.
• Control over spacing, alignment, and layers is very limited.
• "Fix Layout" is vague and temperamental.
Canva still completely excels in flexibility.
But... Pomelli does something that Canva does not do at all:
It understands the context of your brand, not just its designs.
Canva gives you tools.
Pomelli gives you identity.
And here lies the power… especially for content creators, small business owners, and independent developers who want ready and quick results, without long design sessions.
