Introduction
Let's be honest: the path to UX today is not like it used to be.
In 2016 or even 2020, it was all about “learn Figma + create a portfolio = get a job”. In 2026, the game has changed.
I have personally been through it all: rejections, strange feedback on my portfolio, and even nonsensical advice. If I were to start from scratch, this is the plan I would follow.
Think of it as a friendly session, not a “formal blog”. This is a clear roadmap that saves you from getting lost and shows you the steps that truly open the door to the world of UX in 2026.
1️⃣ Understand the reality before you start
UX is not just “screen design”.
Design is just one part. The rest involves discussions, persuasion, and alignment with the team.
Do not confuse UI (colours and buttons) with UX (the complete user journey).
Before you spend thousands of dollars on a course, check the job market. Remote jobs are fewer, and where you live matters more.
2️⃣ Learn with AI methods
Soft Skills= 30–40% of your time. Communication, persuasion, collaboration.
Hard Skills= 60–70%. Tools like Figma + prototyping + testing + AI tools.
Use AI as an assistant:
Organise your learning resources in NotebookLM to generate Mind Maps in a minute.
TryVibe Coding: rebuilding real applications and deploying them directly on Vercel.
Make ChatGPT your friend: it prepares challenges for you, critiques case studies, and helps you write professional content.
3️⃣ Bonus feature: Learn Vibe Coding
You don’t need to be a programmer. But learning a “little bit” of code allows you to:
turn your ideas into real products.
show hiring managers that you understand the journey from design to execution.
Stand out from other designers who stop at static screens.
4️⃣ Portfolio: Specialisation is your secret.
The worst thing is to create a portfolio that looks like thousands of Bootcamp graduates. The solution:
Specialise by process (e.g., Testing or Prototyping expert).
Or by field: Health, Fintech, SaaS, E-commerce, or AI.
A specialised portfolio gives you a clear identity instead of blending into the crowd.
5️⃣ Job search: Intelligence, not randomness.
Sending 200 applications = Spam. Building a network = Results.
Participate in Slack/Discord communities. Engage on LinkedIn with designers and managers.
Prepare for interviews: Presenting the portfolio + design challenges + behavioural questions.
Let AI train you on answers and give you feedback.
Remember: rejection is normal. Even professionals have an inbox full of 'we're sorry'.
🎯 Summary: Playbook 2026
The old equation is over. In 2026, the path is:
Facing reality.
Building a mix of soft and technical skills.
Learn Vibe Coding as an additional skill.
Customise your portfolio.
Consider job searching as a well-thought-out plan, not a lottery.
With this approach, not only will you enter the field, but you will also stand out and build your place.
